Historical Background The holy festival of Janmashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada, the birth month of Yogiraj Shri Krishna. Shri Krishna was the eight child of Vasudeva-Devaki, the feudatories of Mathura state. Hearing a voice from Akash that Vasudeva - a child born from Devaki's womb would be the cause of the death of the tyrannical and ruthless prince Kansa, the frightened Kansa locked him in a dungeon. Kansa killed the seven children of Devaki who were born there, but with the help of his well-wishers, Vasudeva took the eighth child to his best friend Nanda.
