INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY (2021)

 International Youth Day is celebrated on 12 August. As the name suggests, this day is celebrated to give voice to the initiatives and actions taken by the youth across the world. This year the theme of the day has been fixed as “Transforming Food System: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”. The reason for choosing this topic is to highlight the impact of the efforts young people make in the transformation of food systems. The purpose of this theme is to make people aware of the need for inclusion of old and young individuals in their efforts and ideas to collectively save the planet.

HOW  IS INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY CELEBRATED?

To celebrate International Youth Day, various activities like concerts, workshops, cultural programs and meetings are organized by schools and other educational institutions to engage youth and mainstream their voices, actions and initiatives.

Every year 12 August is observed as International Youth Day to raise awareness about the cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. The day was designated as International Youth Day by the United Nations in 1999, when the General Assembly endorsed the recommendation of the 'World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth'. Since then, it is being celebrated every year to highlight the importance of youth as the driving force of change in the world.


To celebrate this day, concerts, workshops, cultural programs and meetings are organized by schools and other educational institutions to engage the youth and mainstream their voices, actions and initiatives.


2021 THEME OF INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY

Every year this day is marked with a theme as per the relevance of time. This year's theme is "Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health". It was chosen by the United Nations after highlighting these issues at the ECOSOC Youth Forum (EYF) 2021.

The United Nations, in partnership with the world body's Food and Agriculture Organization and the leading group for children and youth, will celebrate the day virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic. "Through youth education, engagement, innovation and entrepreneurial solutions, this year's International Youth Day aims to provide a platform for youth to continue the momentum from EYF in the lead-up to the High-Level Food Systems Summit," the world body said. HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY

The first International Youth Day was celebrated in 1999. This year, the day will be celebrated by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Leading Group for Children and Youth. The celebration of the day includes coming up with events and competitions to engage the youth in meaningful debates and discussions about the future. Young people all over the world have to face many challenges.

SIGNIFICANCE OF INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY (2021)

In many third world countries, the youth of today are struggling for basic facilities like health, education and employment. The day provides a platform to discuss such relevant issues and come up with plans and ideas that can help improve such situations in the days to come. Important discussions about mental health and the struggles youth go through are also discussed and innovative mechanisms to help people with mental illness are discussed.


This year, it may not be possible for many countries to physically organize events due to the ongoing pandemic. However, various organizations that are working for the betterment of the youth will organize discussions, debates, webinars and talks virtually during the day.
